GDPR: THE BACKGROUND

The growth of the internet, social media and new information technology means that more personal data is being generated, processed and shared than ever before. Current legislation was not designed to cope with data in the digital age. Consumers are also concerned about what happens to their personal data and legislators are reflecting these concerns in the new Regulation.

WHAT IS CHANGING?

The key themes of GDPR are transparency and accountability. From a marketing perspective, this means ensuring data subjects understand how their personal data may be used and processed when they supply it to you. Organisations must keep records of personal data they are processing, account for where the data has come from and explain the legal basis under which they are processing it.

GDPR will also extend the definition of personal data to include online identifiers, such as IP addresses and mobile device IDs.

Report: Analysis of the potential economic impact of GDPR

We have been preparing for GDPR for well over a year. Our first step was to set up a GDPR working party chaired by Paul Winters, CACI’s Managing Director, involving key stakeholders. The working party defined next actions, including conducting data protection impact assessments (DPIAs) on our core data products, rewriting our privacy policy and conducting due diligence on data suppliers. We have also conducted a study with London Economicswhich examines the potential economic impact of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), in light of the implications of the ICO’s draft guidelines on consent.

This page has been created to provide you with useful information about GDPR such as clients’ FAQs  and our answers. We have also provided an overview of GDPR to aid your understanding of what the Regulation involves. Paul Winters has been writing a number of blogs  about GDPR which you can read here.
