CACI’s Data Lab have developed Paycheck Disposable Income – a measure of average disposable income for households in each of the 1.5 million residential postcodes across the UK.

At a regional level, despite London having the highest average income, levels of disposable income are actually lower than several of the UK’s other regions due to the cost of living in the capital.

Differences are also observed between demographic groups, with city renters and those with large mortgages and young families having proportionally higher outgoings than others. This is intuitively correct but now the figures are there to evidence this.

Paycheck Disposable Income takes into account the following essential outgoings, which are subtracted from gross income:

  • Tax and National Insurance contributions
  • Food and clothing
  • Mortgage and rents
  • Council Tax, utilities, water and structural insurance
  • Childcare, student loans and pension contributions
  • Travel to work costs

The resulting measure of ‘net disposable income’ opens up a wide range of applications where the crucial factor isn’t how much income people have, but what they have available in their wallet.
